2023 SAMMIES Competition Kicks Off

The 2023 British Sandwich Designer of the Year (SAMMIES) competition kicks off next week with the three semi-finals taking place across the country. Following hundreds of entries, across 5 different categories, the semi-finalists will battle it out for a place in the prestigious final in London in May.

The Futura Foods sponsored YAMAS! Feta category saw entrants challenged to create sandwich or food-to-go product showcasing innovative uses of the Greek cheese. Judges wanted the entrants to think outside the box, use trending cuisines and alternative bread carriers, whilst also being conscious of health criteria such as fat, protein, and salt levels.

The award-winning YAMAS! Greek Feta is a fantastic option as the star ingredient for this competition. It is highly versatile and great for adding injections of flavour into all sorts of dishes, from salads to wraps to pasta and even baking with vegetables. It crumbles, blitzes, slices, and cooks well whilst still holding its form.

Following 46 entrants submitting their creations, the list was whittled down to just five of the best for each heat. The judges, including two representing Futura Foods, will get to taste the sandwiches in person as well as questioning the contestants on the inspiration and though process behind their ideas.

The winner of each heat will progress through to the final of the competition held at The Royal Lancaster London in May. Two ‘lucky losers’ will be selected from across the three heats to also progress.

The competition has attracted entrants from the some of the biggest players in the world of food to go, including Greencore, Samworth Brothers, and Leathams.

The three regional semi-finals will be held on the 21st, 22nd, and 23rd March in Darlington, Hinckley, and Reading and also features four additional categories for products including bacon, chicken, and vegan products.
