Cheese and Alcohol Pairings

The festive season is coming, and we all know it’s about great company, good quality food and that perfect little tipple of choice. Our gatherings may be much smaller this year, or even virtual, but what should not change is that it is a real occasion to spend with your loved ones.

We have paired some cheeses we know and love with alcoholic drinks to really give your gatherings a bit of sparkle.

Manchego paired with Ximenenz or Harveys Bristol Sherry. The creamy nuttiness of a Manchego is complimented well with a good rich cherry, the deoth and roundness of the cheese is enhanced by the sweet notes.

Feta paired with Sauvignon Blanc. The crumbly and tangy feta harmonizes with a crisp, dry and zesty Sauvignon Blanc. A pairing perfect for al fresco summer evenings.

Vintage Cheddar and Dry Still Apple Cider. A strong Vintage Cheddar with characteristic calcium lactate crystals, enjoyed alongside a crisp dry cider is a Somerset pairing made in heaven.

24 month Parmigiano Reggiano with Lambrusco Rosso. The fruity pineapple notes of the Parmigiano lends itself beautifully to a light, slightly frizzante, red wine. A good Lambrusco Rosso is quite difficult to get hold of, but the flavour of a well-rounded cheese like Parmigiano Reggiano also means that it pairs well with a white Lambrusco or Prosecco.

Halloumi with Shandy/Raddler. Grilled Halloumi is reminiscent of BBQ’s and summer eating, and it couples well with slightly citrus flavours. The caramelised and crispy outer of the Halloumi together with the creamy yet squeaky centre, combined with an ice cold shandy or raddler, are simply perfect.

Smoked Cheddar with Spiced Rum. Both of these have different flavour profiles, yet charmingly complement one another when enjoying together. The creaminess of the smoked cheddar with the sweet yet spicy rum go unexpectedly hand in hand.

Why not give these a go or create combinations of your own. ‘Tis the season to be Jolly!
